Director, Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability (SWIS)

Dr. Sahadat Hossain is a Professor of Civil Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Hossain has more than 20 (Twenty) years of professional and research experience in sustainable waste management, landfill, landfill gas to energy and landfill mining. He is working on research, development, and implementation of innovative solutions for sustainable waste management and to provide support for waste management in USA and developing countries. Dr. Hossain is the founding director of Organized Research Center of Excellence (ORCE) – Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability (SWIS) since 2015. The mission of SWIS is to work on developing clean and healthy urban cities through sustainable waste management. As part of SWIS mission, Dr. Hossain have organized “Sustainable Waste Management and Landfill Training” program ISWA – SWIS Winter School for participants from around the world since 2016, in collaboration with International Solid Waste Association (ISWA). Participants from more than 80 countries participated in the training program in last five years. He had presented on “Garbage: Asset or Liability” – as a TED Talk speaker in April 2016. 

Dr. Hossain is working on research and practical operational issues with local cities (The City of Irving, City of Grand Prairie, City of Denton, City of Corpus Christi, City of Garland) in Texas and many international cities. He had worked with many African countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, and has ongoing projects on Sustainable Waste Management in Ethiopia.  Dr. Hossain was invited as a keynote speakers, panelist, or technical experts in many countries, including Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, Brazil, Colombia, Austria, Finland, Belgium, Serbia, India, Bangladesh, and Thailand. He is also working actively with C40, CCAC (Climate & Clean Air Coalition, a program under UNEP), International Solid Waste Association, and Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA). 

Dr. Hossain is extensively working on reusing recycling materials for other engineering applications, as part of his commitment towards circular economy. One of his major projects was with Texas Department of Transportation on using Recycled Plastic Pins (RPP) for slope stabilization in Texas, a very cost effective, sustainable, and green solutions and was adopted by TxDOT. Dr. Hossain was interviewed by local TV (ABC News, CBS News, Fox News) and national newspaper Atlantic Cities on the utilization recycled plastic pins for slope stabilization.  Right now, Dr Hossain is working on Plastic
